Constrained images, especially for pixel art it may easily blur it, images at full size on the dashboard are 540 px across, average images are cut off at 810px at length and "long" images at 1458px however they may reduce greatly in quality.
image sets are 268 px squares for two image lines, 177px for three image lines.
You have to keep in mind the sizing of your images constantly with tumblr, and often you have to keep in mind tumblrs sizing when making art for tumblr.
I have frequently have to resize images to make my pixel art stand out and tumblr is very fickle about how it takes images.
A full sized image that tumblr has stretched and degraded in quality, compared to an up scaled version of the same image.
Tumblr will degrade the quality of most images when on the dashboard, while on blog veiw it may be great it's difficult to make something as fine as pixel art look good and to draw people into following work.
Gifs up to 3 mb can be uploaded at 500px at most.
Advertisements are now a regular part of the dashboard view on tumblr, and in Dashboard-blog and only blog view preview it will be a regular part of your blog, unless you opt out of in in the settings, however with yahoo's buyout and how the terms and conditions of tumblr are changing i would foresee advertisement on tumblr becoming mandatory in the near future.
Very easy, there are plenty of styles to choose from and i wide community dedicated to creating blog themes that are all freeware. However with changes and updates to tumblrs system you may unexpectedly find themes to break under these changes.
When tagging images, tumblr will let you tag upto 30 unique tags on one post, it has a hashtag system where it will store you frequently used tags and also popular tags containing words that have been written. however it will only index the first 20 tags, the last 10 will not show up on in site search. The search pages show what is most recent, but also what is currently most popular in what is most recent and you may not show up very easily on there. Many will more often go through a "tagged/" page to search for new content.
a wide based community of all people, while it's a little more difficult to advertise yourself, as your posts can easily gain notes, but an artist may never get any benefit from it. Cultivating a consuming audience can be easy, but getting clients from that audience is harder.
As of current there is an ongoing spam bot problem that effects your statistics.
Ask, message, reply to post and submission features are really great ways to interact with your community.

You can manage as many as 100 blogs (1 main blog, 99 side blogs), you can use custom domain names for free, although if you want to create a freestanding website through tumblr you will have to code out certain features such as following, liking and messaging buttons on the blog view.
You can leave your account inactive for upto a year before your original tumblr blog title is made available again, although you get an archived version of your website. As of this point it is unclear if you can re-gain access to the tumblr blog after this.
Bottom line
Tumblr can be a really great community to spread your art around, post casually and interact with an audience however it does not lend itself to finely detailed or high scaled work with how it degrades images and it seems to be going downward as a art platform with it's buyout from yahoo!
A Great casual social media however, it should not be a staple website for how you display your art as there are too many changing things in it's legislation.
